What is the different use of carbon dioxide?

What is the different use of carbon dioxide?

The use of carbon dioxide is related to its properties.Under normal conditions, carbon dioxide is a colorless, odorless, mildly acidic gas. It does not help breathing.

But carbon dioxide is an inert gas. For this reason it is used for various purposes.  Carbon dioxide is one and a half times heavier than air. Carbon dioxide is highly soluble in water. It forms carbonic acid when dissolved in water.

use of carbon dioxide

Carbon dioxide gas can be easily converted to liquid by reducing the pressure.

This liquid reduces the pressure of carbon dioxide and allows it to evaporate faster, causing a portion of it to solidify.

Use of solid carbon dioxide or dry ice

Solid carbon dioxide or dry ice is used as an important refrigerant. Because of dry ice or card ice is predominantly a cooling agent. It helps one to achieve temperature lower than ice.

For this reason, liquid or solid carbon dioxide is used as a freezer in the food industry, especially for the preservation of ice cream, fish, meat and other frozen foods.

Solid carbon dioxide is always below -78.5 ° C at regular atmospheric pressure regardless of air temperature.

For this reason, solid carbon dioxide or dry ice is used for small shipments where refrigeration equipment is not practical.

Liquid carbon dioxide used as a refrigerant prior to the discovery of R-12.
Its physical properties are highly optimal for cooling, refrigeration and heating purposes, superior volumetric cooling capacity.

Coca-Cola has fielded CO2-based beverage coolers. Besides, the global automobile industry is expected to decide on the next generation refrigerator for carbon dioxide in air conditioning.

Use of carbon dioxide in fire extinguishers

Carbon dioxide does not burn itself or help others to burn. This is why carbon dioxide gas is used in fire extinguishers. It is a metal cone shaped vessel.

It contains sodium carbonate and concentrated sulfuric acid. Their reaction produces large amounts of carbon dioxide and water.

This mixture of carbon dioxide and water is thrown into the fire to extinguish the fire. For this reason, carbon dioxide is used in the fire brigade.

Air with more than 10% carbon dioxide can extinguish a free flame. Such concentrations can increase further in silos, digestive chambers, wells, sewers and the like. Care must be taken when entering such confined spaces.

Use of carbon dioxide in photosynthesis by plants

Respiratory organisms release carbon dioxide as a waste product. Green plants use this carbon dioxide to form food by photosynthesis.

In this process, green plants absorb water from the soil and carbon dioxide from the air in the presence of sunlight to produce sugars.

Use of carbon dioxide in photosynthesis by plants

In this case green leaf chlorophyll acts as a catalyst and oxygen is produced from carbon dioxide through the process of photolysis.

In addition CO2 intake maintains and increases the growth rate of the plant.

Medical use of carbon dioxide

Carbon dioxide also has important uses in treatment. Carbogen is used to artificially inhale a patient suffering from pneumonia, immersion in water or toxic gases such as carbon monoxide.

This carbogen is a medical gas mixture of 95% oxygen gas and 5% carbon dioxide gas.

Use of carbon dioxide in the chemical industry

There is a lot of use of carbon dioxide in the chemical industry. Such as preparation of urea fertilizer by reaction of ammonia with carbon dioxide, production of ammonium sulfate fertilizer, methanol, inorganic and organic carbonate, polyurethane and sodium salicylate etc.

It is also used to make plastics and polymers by mixing carbon dioxide with epoxide. Again, the industrial production of sodium carbonate is carried out in the solve method using carbon dioxide.

Use of carbon dioxide as a cold drink

Carbon dioxide is highly soluble in water. The solubility of CO2 increases with increase in pressure at constant temperature.

This property of carbon dioxide is used to make soda water, lemonade or similar drinks by dissolving excess carbon dioxide gas in water at high pressure. Carbon dioxide is also used in the preparation of baking powder.

Use of supercritical carbon dioxide as solvent

Liquid carbon dioxide acts as a good solvent for many lipophilic organic compounds. For this reason it is used to remove caffeine from coffee.

CO2 has attracted attention in the pharmaceutical and other chemical processing industries as a less toxic alternative to more traditional solvents such as organo chlorides.

Carbon dioxide is used in green chemistry as a green solvent. Due to the supercritical properties of carbon dioxide, it is used to prepare some gaseous substances.

Use of carbon dioxide in the bakery industry

Carbon dioxide is used to make the bread soft, tender and delicious. Baking powder is used in making bread. The chemical reaction of baking powder produces a lot of carbon dioxide.

When this carbon dioxide is released in the form of bubbles, the bread becomes soft and porous.

Industrial use of carbon dioxide

Carbon dioxide is used in various industries. For example, carbon dioxide is used in the metal industry as a hardening and soldering agent for welding molds.

It is also used to harden steel. Carbon dioxide is used to produce various electronic equipment
s. Carbon dioxide gas is used in chemical production and in industries as feedstock.

Carbon dioxide gas is used in refrigeration systems, welding systems and water treatment processes or to stabilize the pH of water.

Use of carbon dioxide in oil industry

Carbon dioxide is used in advanced oil recovery. This method can increase the extra crude or original oil recovery from the initial extraction from the enhanced oil recovery fields.

In this process, carbon dioxide is injected into an oil reservoir under high pressure, which pushes the oil through pipes and up to the soil surface.

Carbon dioxide gas injection helps in oil recovery and reduces the viscosity of the recovered oil.

Electronic applications of carbon dioxide

Carbon dioxide gas is used in the electronics industry for circuit board assembly. It is also used to manufacture semiconductor devices and as a cleaner.

In addition, CO2 emitted from power generation can be used in ponds for algae development, from which biodiesel fuel can be made.

A strain of Cyanobacterium, Cyanococcus elangatas, has been genetically engineered to make fuel isobotraldehyde and isobutanol from CO2 using genetically photosynthetic.

Use of Carbon dioxide in carbon cycle

Carbon dioxide plays an important role as a component of the carbon cycle.

The process by which carbon is exchanged between the atmosphere, the terrestrial biosphere (including fresh water systems and soils), oceans and sediments (including fossil fuels).
Undoubtedly these can be affected by a variety of human activities.

Environmental use of carbon dioxide

Aerosol cans are used as a propeller, replacing it with more environmental hassle alternatives.

When using solid carbon dioxide or dry ice shells to replace the shelf when removing paint from the surface, residue disposal problems are reduced al it is used to neutralize alkaline water.

Other uses of carbon dioxide

Carbon dioxide can be used as a way to control the pH of a swimming pool. Similarly, it is also used to maintain reef aquariums, where it is used in calcium furnaces to temporarily lower the pH of water.

CO2 is used as the primary coolant in the British advanced gas-cooled reactor for nuclear power generation. Carbondioxide additives are commonly used for ethanasia in laboratory research animals.
