What is ' ipso substitution' reaction and what is electrophile ?

What is ipso substitution reaction ?

If one or more substituent in an aromatic compound be substituted by the attack of an electrophilic , then the substitution is said to an 'ipso substitution' reaction.

‘Ipso  substitution ‘ may be also called aromatic electrophilic substitution reaction.
General example of ‘ipso substitution' reaction are as follows,

A number of 'ipso substitution 'reactions are known in which the attacking electrophile is H+ ion.
Few example of 'ipso substitution reaction in which  alkyl groups are substituted by the attack of electrophile are as follows,

Group other than alkyl may also be displaced.

What is electrophiles ?

Electrophiles are electron seeking species . They seek electron because they are electron deficient species.

Therefore they  accept electrons from other species, for this reason electrophiles are also called electron acceptors.

A particular site of an electrophile is generally found to be electron deficient and that is called electrophilic site.
Electrophilic  sites are of three types,
