Ammonia water means aqueoussolution of ammonia. Ammonia water is also known as ammonia liquor, aqueous ammonia, ammonium hydroxide, aqua ammonia, ammoniacal liquor etc.

It is symbolically expressed as NH3 (aq.) or NH4OH. Ammonia water solution has fishy and highly pungent smell.

Ammonia is highly soluble in water. It is experimentally found that, about 1150 volume of ammonia is dissolved in 1 volume of water. But the solubility of ammonia in water decreases with increase in temperature.

 

When ammonia is dissolved in water, ammonia is attached with water molecules by H-bonding to form ammonium hydroxide compound. In this process gaseous ammonia dissolves in water to form ammonia water solution.

 

The concentrated ammonia water solution is called liquor ammonia. It is light yellow solution. It contains 35% of ammonia by weight.

 

Ammonia is a weak Lewis base. Hence ammonia water solution behaves as a weak alkaline solution. This is supported by calculating the pH (11.6) value of ammonia water.

Ammonia is a covalent molecule with chemical formula, NH3. It is unionized and exists in the molecular state. On the other side, ammonia produced ammonia water when it dissolves in water.

 

Ammonia in water forms ammonium hydroxide which is ionized into NH4+ and OH– ions. The chemical formula of ammonia water is NH4OH.

 

The molecular mass of ammonia is 17.03 g/mole while the molecular mass of ammonia water or ammonium hydroxide is 35.04 g/mole.

Ammonia water that is aqueous solution of ammonia is a solution of ammonia in water. Both the concentrated and diluted ammonia water solution is a very important laboratory reagent.

 

It is a main constituent of NH4OH + NH4Cl buffer solution which is used to identification of Al3+, Fe3+ ions in group separation. Ammonia water is used in traditional qualitative inorganic analysis as a complexant and base.


Like many amines, it gives a deep blue coloration with Cu (II) solutions. Ammonia water solution can dissolve silver oxide residues, such as that formed from Tollens' reagent.


 It is often found in solutions used to clean gold, silver, and platinum jewelry, but may have adverse effects on porous gem stones like opals and pearls. Ammonia water solution is used to prepare primary ammine, secondary ammine, tertiary ammine, aniline etc compounds.

 

 Ammonia water or aqueous solution of ammonia is commonly used as a good house hold cleaner. Generally diluted ammonia water solution (1% - 3%) is used as a household cleaner for many surfaces.


This is because ammonia water, as a cleanser, makes an object streak-free shine. One of its most common uses is to clean glass, window, porcelain, and stainless steel. It is also used for cleaning ovens and soaking to loosen bakes-on grime.


Is ammonia soluble in water?

 

Ammonia is a polar molecule. Hence, it is easily dissolve in polar water molecule to form ammonia water solution. It has been experimentally found that 1150 volume of ammonia can be dissolve in 1 volume of water.
