1 to 20 IUPAC name of alkenes
The unsaturated hydrocarbons those are contain at least one carbon – carbon double bond is called alkene or olefin. The general formula of alkenes or olefins compound is, Cn H2n. Where, n = 2 , 3, 4, 5……….etc.
Since, alkene compound contains at least one C – Cdouble bond, hence for the formation of most simple alkene, at least two carbon
atoms must be required.
Now, according to the IUPAC system, the nomenclature of
alkene or olefin compound must be following the given rules.
(I). At first we choose the long chain alkene. Then we
put the number on carbon atom of the long chain olefin.
The numbering would be
in such a way that the double bond must be contain least number.
(II). If the compound contain branch chain, then the numbering
of double bond first as usual, but the naming of the olefin will be start with
the naming of branch chain with its position.
According to IUPAC rule, the naming system of alkene or
olefin is, number of carbon + ene. Such as eth + ene = ethane, prop + ene =
propene etc.
The IUPAC name and structure of straight chain alkenes
with carbon number 1 to 20 are shown below.
Alkenes with carbon number 4 and 5 have two isomer of
each of them. Such as but-1-ene , but-2-ene and pent-1-ene , pent-2-ene.
In the similar way, alkenes with carbon atom 6 and 7
have three isomers of each and alkenes with carbon atom 8 and 9 have fourisomers of each.
For every alkene with carbon atom more than 10 has five
or more isomers.
Such as C = 10, 11 , the number of isomers are five of
each.
C
= 12, 13 , the number of isomers are six of each.
C
= 14, 15 , the number of isomers are seven of each.
C = 16, 17 , the number of
isomers are eight of each.
C = 18, 19 , the number of
isomers are nine of each.
C
= 20, 21 , the number of isomers are ten of each.
