What is L S D ?
The full form LSD is lysergic acid diethylamide. It is prepared from lysergic acid which is an alkaloid. An ergot fungus grow on mustered seeds when they are left warmed moistened .
Lysergic acid is produced from this fungus. On taking lysergic acids from these seeds attached by fungus man suffers from ergotism .
This acid causes severe pain in joints and entrimities and disturbs mental equilibrium.
Preparation of LSD
When lysergic acid reacts
with ethyl alcohol in the presence of sulfuric acid an ester is produced. This ester reacts
with diethyl amine to produce lysergic acid diethyl amide that is LSD.
Use of LSD
LSD is used as hallucinogen and its uptake produce hallucination. People uses it in high doses. For this reason it is banded in many countries in the world.
Why mutarotation does not occur only in pure pyridine or in pure cresol ?
It has been experimentally found that mutarotation of mono saccharides happen in amphiprotic solvent like water or in mixture of pyridine and cresol.
Because ring opening and ring closure reaction both the acid and the base are essentially required and this is easily achieved in aqueous medium.
A mixture of pyridine and cresol also behave as an amphiprotic solvent and mutarotation of glucose is also observed. But in pure pyridine and in pure cresol no mutarotation is possible.
